Huawei Digital Power and TÜV Rheinland jointly released the White Paper on High-Precision SOC Algorithms for Energy Storage Systems Across the Full Lifecycle during Intersolar Europe on June 24, 2026.
The white paper introduces a comprehensive framework for evaluating state of charge, or SOC, management across different energy storage applications. It expands SOC assessment beyond basic estimation accuracy to include automatic calibration, balancing strategies, operating-condition adaptability, and usable battery capacity.
Accurate SOC management is critical to the efficiency, safety, responsiveness, and lifecycle value of energy storage systems. It is particularly important as energy storage is increasingly used for renewable energy integration, energy arbitrage, backup power, grid ancillary services, and grid-forming applications.
Based on its technical specification 2 PfG 3165/12.25, TÜV Rheinland established a three-level SOC evaluation system:
• Level 1 – Basic: Calibration mainly during deep charging and discharging, with cell-level balancing.
• Level 2 – Plus: Supports shallow charge and discharge calibration and rack-level balancing.
• Level 3 – Prime: Enables high-accuracy calibration under multiple operating conditions, plant-wide balancing, pack-level optimization, and full utilization of usable battery capacity.
TÜV Rheinland evaluated Huawei’s LUNA2000 and LUTERRA2000 energy storage systems across key indicators, including SOC accuracy, automatic calibration, capacity availability, frequency regulation, grid-forming capability, black start, and multi-level balancing.
Huawei’s energy storage systems achieved the highest Prime, or Level 3, rating and received the corresponding TÜV Rheinland certification.
