[Shanghai, China, September 3, 2024] TÜV Rheinland hosted the 10th "All Quality Matters" Solar & ESS
Congress and Award Ceremony in Shanghai. Huawei Digital Power's Smart String Grid-Forming ESS Platform
received the Innovation Award for its outstanding performance in architecture, safety, grid forming, and
intelligence.
This ESS addresses the inconsistencies and uncertainties of lithium batteries through the controllability of
power electronics. Huawei Digital Power has developed end-to-end technical capabilities in ESS safety,
spanning from materials to intelligent sensing, cells to grids, and architecture design to safety
protection.
1. Architecture: The ESS features the world's first smart string grid-forming energy storage platform,
combined with a two-stage string modular architecture. This design ensures a stable power supply with an
availability of up to 99.9%.
2. Safety: The ESS provides full-link active safety from cells and packs to racks, the system, and the grid.
Huawei prioritizes the safety design of battery packs, the core component of an ESS. Each battery pack is
encased in metal, and equipped with positive-pressure oxygen blocking and directional smoke exhaust
mechanisms which prevent the spread of thermal runaway, minimizing risks.
3. Grid forming: The multi-site self-synchronized amplitude and frequency regulation technology, along with
wideband self-stabilizing and stabilizing control technology, has received world-leading certifications by
Chinese Society for Electrical Engineering, surpassing industry standards. This solution enhances grid
connection and integration performance and is suitable for various scenarios, such as strong and weak power
grids and off-grid scenarios.
4. Intelligence: Intelligent diagnosis and fault warning technologies can generate warnings 1 to 7 days in
advance for over 10 types of faults. Pack-level active balancing and automatic SOC calibration improve the
depth of discharge at constant power and discharge energy throughout the lifecycle. The innovative thermal
management architecture features hybrid air and liquid cooling, which reduces auxiliary power consumption,
enhances round-trip efficiency, prolongs the system lifespan, and increases discharge energy.
Huawei's Smart String Grid-Forming ESS Platform has been successfully implemented in the world's first 100%
renewable microgrid, The Red Sea destination, in Saudi Arabia, as well as in multiple 100 MWh string
grid-forming energy storage plants. These applications showcase Huawei's technological innovation and
application capabilities, setting a benchmark for achieving global carbon neutrality goals.
